As ex-coach to the golden national field hockey women, Marc draws parallels between top-level sport and business: how can I make myself stand out (in difficult times)?
The circumstances during the Olympic Games in Beijing (2008) were very difficult: the heat, the smog, and a humidity of above 90%. It was a downright crisis according to many people: how can you perform in this ridiculous climate, for goodness sake?
Marc thought very differently: Marc saw chances. Indeed, it was because of these very heavy circumstances that his team could stand out: by using things like ice baths, cooling vests, oxygen masks and IVs, Marc turned a crisis into an opportunity.
His hockey women recovered more quickly and were considerably fitter than their competition in Beijing. In the final they beat the host country, China, thereby winning Olympic Gold.
If you always do what you have always done, you get what you have always gotten. Why wait for better times if you can create them yourself?
